First, I would like to thank Ryan for a couple months ago coming out with me to play. This is what inspired this blog. I am sure you had a great experience. Thanks! Disc golf ? What in the world is that ? Well let me tell you. I bet you before you read this you've never heard of disc golf. Is this lockdown and pandemic boring you and you have nothing to do. Keep on reading if this is you! You will not regret it.
Disc golf is a sport where you have to start from a tee and throw a disc (which is like a frisbee but made for disc golf) into a disc golf basket in the least amount of throws possible. Most rules are like normal golf with a few slight changes.
Why is Disc Golf this good during Covid 19? Well, it is one of the few sports and activities that are allowed and open right now. You can’t do soccer, basketball and hockey etc. I’m disc golf there is no physical contact and if you are playing in a group you can stay social distanced. There are many new people playing disc golf out there and it is growing rapidly everywhere! When I went everyone was so nice and welcoming. Disc golf makes a community.
You might be thinking golf is boring. Disc golf is more enjoyable and more people are able to play. Disc golf is much less expensive than golf. Ever since the first throw, I was hooked. A member at the club I joined, gave me my first disc. It’s just so cool to see the disc fly in the air. I have taken many people to the course to try it out. They all loved it!
Ask Ryan, the first time he went to the course he loved. He said that the first day it was snowy and not great weather, we only played one hole. Me too it wasn’t very enjoyable in the bad weather. A couple days later we went on a sunny day and him and Evan loved it. They said they weren’t that great at the beginning and they progressed and it was a whole lot of fun. It is not that hard to get good at. Disc golf can be played in all weather.
Now you’re probably thinking “Well okay I guess I’ll go buy one of these discs at dollarama” right? Ok but you should get the right discs made for disc golf. Where can I buy them? There are many options. I recommend buying a mid-range or a putter for your first disc. It has more control than a driver. Even more I suggest you get a starter set from Innova.
Check out the links below :
For the starter set you can go on Amazon and search “Innova disc golf starter set.” The starter set comes with a slow fairway driver that is controllable unlike faster speed drivers. A mid-range and a good putter. They are the Leopard (fairway driver), Shark (mid-range), Aviar (putter).

Okay so you’re probably wondering what I mean by Putters, Fairway Drivers, and Distance Drivers. Well there are 4 main types of discs, distance driver, fairway driver, mid-range and putter.
Putter - Is mainly used for a short distance to put it in the basket, for short approaches and sometimes off the tee.
Mid-range - is used for longer approaches, off the tee. It is like a control disc for controlled shots.
Fairway Driver - These could give you a bit more distance. Are used off the tee. Still recommended to use a mid or a putter as your first disc. As your first fairway driver I would recommend a Innova Teebird or a Innova Leopard. These are slow fairway drivers. Fairway drivers have a bit less control
Distance Drivers - These have the most distance potential out of all. Not recommended for players starting out. They have less control and higher speed. These are used for longer shots of the tee. Once you have the arm speed I would recommend the Innova Mamba, Innova Sidewinder or the Discraft Avenger SS.
If you really get into the sport you might wanna get a disc golf bag. Again you can go on any of the links and search for "disc golf bags.”
Note: When these fairway and distance drivers are thrown with power they can skip which can give you a bit more distance.
Beginner Mistakes To Avoid: one big mistake that beginners make is grabbing a high speed driver like a Speed 12. You might be thinking “This has more speed so this will have more distance.” Not for a person that is starting out. This has much less control. I bet you when you start out a mid-range or a putter will go much farther. Once you get better and you get more arm speed these might go a bit farther.
Backhand : The most common shot in disc golf, it is like throwing a frisbee.
Forehand/Sidearm : This is the second most common shot in disc golf in which you turn your body the other way facing to your right and use your wrist to release the disc.
Here is how to putt around the basket :
To find a course near you search up : Disc Golf. It will show you the nearest courses by you. Courses usually have 9 or 18 holes.
Here is a video about a couple of basic rules that also includes the scoring system of disc golf and much more !
Note: there are other rules but this is all you need to know when you are starting out.
If you want to try, head out to your local course or a field and buy a couple or one disc to just try out.
Have Fun!!😀🥏
